Who is Dopey?
We all remember the dwarfs from the much loved Disney story of Snow White and the Seven dwarfs. Doc, Grumpy, Sneezy, Happy, Bashful, Sleepy and Dopey are the dwarfs who tried to protect Snow White from the Evil Queen.Dopey, the dwarf with the goofy yet charming smile. Dopey is easily recognizable with his baggy clothes, floppy ears and that toothy grin. He makes his merry way through life, bumbling along and even occasionally stumbles over his own feet.
Being Dopey this Halloween
Dressing up as this Disney character is a favorite amongst all people, male or female, young or old. My friends' son wants to a Dopey dwarf costume this year, probably because his big sister insists on being Snow White.While hunting online for his costume, I was surprised to see that none of the large retailers have this adorable character as a costume for the Halloween season. While there are no ready made costumes available, bringing the Dopey outfit to life is easy with the right materials and a tutorial.
In fact, after going through the process of piecing this costume together, I found this is one of the cheapest, low cost yet unique costumes you can do (except of course, you want to be Miley Cyrus.)
Get Dopeys' Costume in 6 key pieces
Dressing up as Dopey is relatively easy as he basically has one outfit which you can put together quickly. All you will need is:-- A purple dwarf hat. If you don't have one, a slouchy or baggy beanie will do just fine.
- A very large long sleeved green jacket with buttons or a green turtle neck shirt or a long sleeve green shirt that reaches to your knees. You dont have to wory about getting the perect shade of green as all shades of green work. The sleeves can be as long as possible as Dopey usually just pushes them back up.
- Some portraits of this lovable character have him wearing a pair of light blue pants. Others have him wearing brown. It does not matter if these are too big for you, as Dopey is renowned for wearing large clothes.
- A black belt completes the look. It may be with a small buckle or with a big buckle, whatever you are comfortable with.
- In keeping up with his disheveled look, Dopeys' brown shoes are large and oversized. While you may not have a similar style, any pair of brown shoes will do.
- Complete the look with his floppy dwarf ears.
Why I love this Outfit
The best part of this costume is IT DOESN'T HAVE TO FIT! Dopey is always pictured with parts of his outfit bunched up as they are always over sized.Rummaging through your wardrobe can provide some of the elements of this costume. If you find that you are missing a piece or two (Floppy dwarf ears, anyone?) , you can also pick up the odd pieces you don’t have from your local Walmart or eBay.
Hair? What Hair?
He is also one of the few dwarfs without any facial hair, so there is no need for attaching any fuzz to your face.
Accessories to nail this Costume
1.) Snow White – That would be a dream come true for Dopey. Having your own Snow White to accompany you would be the ultimate accessory.
2.) No Snow White? Oh well, in the story, the dwarfs are miners, so why not find a trusty shovel, pickaxe or diamond to add as a prop to your outfit?
Now, now, dont get carried away and leap into your garden to carry your spade. Consider the fact that whoever dresses up as Dopey; you or your kids, will be walking around trick or treatin' and having to drag a cast iron spade around will have you knackered afer 1 block.
You can still keep in character and carry one of these light weight replica pickaxes and spades.
Dressing up as Dopey this Halloween is an easy and fun activity. Have fun, stay safe and don’t forget to keep in character and add a HUGE grin as part of your costume while in costume.
